In the literature, Rizzi (1997) proposes that focused constituents must undergo movement to the left periphery of a clause in order to satisfy the Focus Criterion, regardless of whether the movement is overt or covert. Given that the LF criteria are universal, it is predicted that Japanese FPPs must satisfy the Focus Criterion by moving to [Spec, FocP] overtly or covertly, because they contain focused constituents. This paper claims that this prediction is false. In order to support this claim, this paper reveals that each FPP has a different LF relation to the position of Neg, and thus has a fi xed LF relation to each other.
