Previous studies have reported that Australia sent platypuses to the U.K. and the U.S.A., terming it “platypus diplomacy.” Additionally, a plan was attempted to send platypuses to Japan in the 1990s. These three plans were executed by different organizations for different purposes. A platypus was sent to the U.K. in 1943 on Winston Churchill’s request, but it was a part of the Australian government’s foreign policy during wartime. Until now, this fact was said to have been confi dential during wartime, but a newspaper article reporting this during wartime have been found. Before the living specimen, Australian government sent Churchill a stuffed platypus specimen which had been bred by Robert Eadie, who had belonged to the troops that helped Churchill during the Second Boer War. From 1916 to 1958, attempts to send platypuses to the U.S. were led by the private sector, including an animal dealer and zoos. Hence, a zoo led the sending of a platypus to the U.S. in 1947, but the Australian government considered that platypus to be a gift from the Australian prime minister to the U.S. president, recognizing their wartime services. Premier John Fahey of New South Wales and Governor Shunichi Suzuki of Tokyo led the plan to exhibit platypuses in an exposition held in Tokyo in 1996 as municipal diplomacy; however, the plan was withdrawn after the premier and governor changed in 1995. The various destinations of platypuses were related to the transition of Australia’s international situation. Before and after World War II, Australia shifted from depending on the U.K. to the U.S.A. for national defense.
