He has established a considerable reputation for his short story collection Jesus’ Son and his novel Tree of Smoke, which won the National Book Award for Fiction. On the other hand, except for the above-mentioned books, his other works have not yet been studied enough. So, this paper focuses on Johnson’s last novel The Laughing Monsters (2014), noting his profi le as a journalist and revealing the metafi ctionality of this novel. The Laughing Monsters seems to be a kind of spy fiction set in Africa. However, the protagonist Nair, incompetent as spy, cannot carry out any missions. Does this mean The Laughing Monsters is an “anti-spy fiction”? In fact, this novel can be a spy novel not for the contents of its story but for its metafictionality. In this novel, spies’ diversionary maneuvering to disguise facts can be regarded as novelists’ writing to create fi ction. In addition, the shift of Nair’s narrational mode to the diary form emphasizes that this story is “written.” Moreover, Nair’s diary, which seems to be nothing but rambles, has an aspect of journalistic writing which reports the dark side of Africa. In that the word “journal” means both “diary” and “news report,” Nair’s writing can be defi ned as“news report” disguised into a diary.
