The attitude of “openness toward society” can be cultivated not least in vocational training. Some schools pursuing the ideas of New Education have offered curricula combining academic learning with vocational training from their founding days in the early twentieth century up to the present time. This paper focuses on the variables and invariables of the relevance that workshops have held in the vocational training at reformist German boarding schools located in a rural setting. Odenwaldschule (1910–2015) emphasized students’ activities in the workshops, which, however, were not intended directly to foster an attitude of “openness toward society” in the prewar period. In the postwar period, the school revised the curricula, offering the acquisition of Abitur (baccalaureate diploma) in parallel with the recognition of vocational credentials; in recognition of these achievements, Darmstadt’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry awarded the school a certificate of “Zukunftswerkstatt (workshop of the future)” in 2013. Urspringschule (1930–) has consistently stressed students’ activities in the workshops. The school offers curricula which include not only the Abitur diploma, but also apprenticeships in carpentry, tailoring, and precision engineering; in recognition of these achievements, Germany’s Economic Juniors awarded the school a certificate of “Fit for Job School” in 2008. The reinforcement of vocational education lends the New Education-oriented schools a high profile, at the same time expressing its attitude of increasing“openness toward society”.}, pages = {199--208}, title = {新教育運動における作業場のレリヴァンス -「社会への開かれ」志向の指標としての職業教育に注目して-}, volume = {70}, year = {2019}, yomi = {イトウ, トシコ} }
