Natural Science, Humanities, Social Science, Education, Educational Practice}, month = {Feb}, note = {application/pdf, This paper examines the legacy of German New Education for its prefiguration of the newly established subject of“public (kokyo)” as mandated by the new Japanese Curriculum Guidelines, which were adopted in 2020 and have been promoted under the slogan “openness toward society”. The paper focuses on Schule Schloss Salem, a German boarding school founded in 1920 and located in a rural setting, whose core educational concept encourages experience-oriented practice in both local and global contexts. The school's curriculum requires experience-oriented practice through various kinds of workshop training and social service. For a full century, this curriculum has continuously been grounded in Kurt Hahn’s (1886-1976) educational concepts, but it has also featured constant change in line with current trends.
