Field experiments using beech seedlings revealed that the osmotic regulator proline accumulates in leaves in response to drought stress. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in lipid-degrading enzymes, glycoprotein biosynthesis, malate synthase activity and apoplast varied significantly between experimental treatments.
