This study evaluates the local mixing performance of jet flows in the developing state by stretching material lines, which are line-shaped passive objects composed of identical fluid elements. Specifically, the mixing performance of a round jet is compared with that of a lobed jet with six exit edge peaks. This is not a parametric study; thus, our conclusions are expected to be valid for other geometries, as they are based on the azimuthal curvature of the jet edges. In the early stages of the round-jet case, the initial lateral vortex rings dominate the mixing even when secondary quasi-streamwise vortices are developed. Large-scale structures persist even in the late stages, in which turbulence is considerably developed, actively folding the material lines and enhancing local mixing through small-scale vortices. Such large-scale structures are absent in the lobed jet, resulting in inferior mixing in the late stages. The material lines in the lobed jet illustrate that the mixing process varies depending on the curvature of the jet-edge regions in noncircular jets. The fluids in regions with large edge curvatures undergo little mixing during the early stages. However, straight (small curvature) exit parts exhibit relatively active mixing. Consequently, they may compensate for their lower mixing efficiency and achieve a greater amount of mixed fluid than round jets. |
