| 内容記述 | Descartes and other philosophers of the early modern times followed the Scholastic tradition in discussing causation as a subject of metaphysics. It was Hume who brought the theory of causation to a new stage by treating causation not as a matter of metaphysics but one of epistemology. Causation is a relation that enables us to extend our past experience, namely the experience of constant conjunction of two kinds of objects or events, to the future. However, the turn from the metaphysics to the epistemology of causation has its own problem. Because if you define causation in terms of constant conjunction you are obliged to say, as Reid ingeniously pointed out, that day is the cause of night and night is the cause of day. Accordingly, in this paper, I elucidate, in view of Reid's account, the nature of difficulties Hume's account of causation got into, and conclude that his turn from the metaphysics to the epistemology of causation had never made it useless to consider causation from the metaphysical point of view. | |||||||||
