This is the reason why the relation between learning and belief is often discussed. This paper addresses the relation between learning and belief in modern educational thought. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, a representative of modern educational thought, found an ideal system of education in Christian  Heinrich Zeller's institute, which essentially depended on \"education through grace\". This is a remarkable occurrence, as the modern way of thinking is normally opposed to any dependence on grace. This state of affairs gives rise to the following questions : 1. Why were the representatives of modern educational thought so intensively attracted to \"education through grace\"? ; 2. How should we interpret the differences of the educational practice  which developed between Pestalozzi's institute and Zeller's institute in spite of their common basis?
