This paper is the first half of these researches. It critically examined the principle of "expression" and that of "imitation". Most of the modern art education has been based on the conception of "expression". But the problems which "expression" has are coming to be clear, so the questions about its historical character are presented these days. The principle of "expression" had its origin in the realization of modern art. "Expression" possesses the radical subjectification in itself which cannot recognize one from another. Though it denied the principle of "imitation", it also hasn't been able to cut off the relation with the principle. It is the principle of "imitation" that art represents the truth. Therefore under the principle people are controlled through the truth.
