The sun as an image of reason was a dominant metaphor among educators of the Enlightenment period. Towards the end of the 19^<th> century, the metaphor regained popularity as an image of sensibility among reformative educators, many of whom cultivated mystical ideas. Their influence on education in general was slight, but Werner Zimmermann (1893-1982), a Swiss teacher turned life-style reformer, gained in 1922, as Wolfgang R. Krabbe (1942-) pointed out, widespread attention through his book \"Lichtwarts (Toward the Light)\", in which he stated that education should aim at forming \"sunny\" characters.
