It is not surprising that a book of political philosophy such as Leviathan atarts with a theory of man. But strangely enough, the theory of man Hobbes develops there begins with a materialistic, physiological explanation of sense, imagenation, memory, etc. It is the same with his first substantive, philosophical work The Elements of Low (1640). (For brevity's sake we shall mention this work simply as Elements hereafter.) What contribution, if any, does such a theory of man makes to his civil philosophy? This is our question in this paper.
