It is necessary for nurses to interact well with patients. They are expected to have communication skills strong enough to comprehend what patients try to convey and how patients feel simultaneously. However, with interpersonal communication in decline in modern society, the acquisition of such communication skills becomes difficult for nurses to obtain. This study introduced simulated patients (hereinafter called SP) as a means to exercise communication, and carried out a questionnaire survey to ask students about the effects of the exercise on their learning. From the results, it was found that the students found their communication skills were weak. Students values in the survey reflected on matters such as;how to utilize nonverbal communication methods, and how to understand patients silence and respond to it in using proper nursing technique. In the exercise with SP, students were able to receive feedback from SP and became aware of their own behaviors in nursing patients. In addition, messages from the students showed that eighty percent of them viewed this nursing exercise as a significant program. It was proven that introducing SP into communication exercises gave students an opportunity to learn about themselves and things they were not aware of.
