Conservation legislation in Japan can be divided into five periods. In the first period (1868-1926), the first cultural property preservation legislation was established. In the second period (1926-1945), the protection of Natural Treasures was made more satisfactory and prevented them from being taken abroad. In the third period (1945-1966), the Cultural Property Preservation Law was enacted and maintained. In the fourth period (1966-1975), the Ancient Capitals Preservation Law was enacted to preserve historic landscape.
