The results showed that periodate oxidation was relatively specific toward phenolic units and could be used along with the nucleus exchange and nitrobenzene oxidation methods to estimate the proportion of the\nphenolic and etherified structures of lignin. The percentage of the syringyl units in hardwood lignins\nhaving a phenolic hydroxyl group was quite small (-5%), being about one-fourth that of the guaiacyl units\n(20%).
