This process is due to a combination of the swelling of carbohydrates by concentrated acid and the solvation of lignin with phenol derivatives. The separation of wood into lignin and carbohydrates proceeds almost quantitatively at room temperature within 20 min, independent of species. The resulting lignin has several distinctive properties which conventional lignins do not have. For example, it is highly phenolic and scarcely has conjugated systems, showing a white color. On the other hand, the carbohydrates separated can easily be converted to monosaccharides in the same reaction system.
