Blood cholesterol is maintained at a constant level by many factors. One of the important factors is a hepatic conversion of cellular cholesterol to bile acids, which play important roles in the digestion and absorption of dietary lipids in the gastrointestinal tract. On the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol, cholesterol 7 α-hydroxylase plays a key role in the process. Recent progresses in the mechanisms for keeping a constant blood cholesterol level, an outline of bile acid synthesis, purification and assay methods of the enzyme are reviewed.
