TMV and ØX174 were effetctively inactivated by D-ribose in the presence of Cu²⁺(10⁻⁴M), but other metal ions such as Fe³⁺, Mn²⁺, Zn²⁺ did not stimulate the inactivation. \nThe inactivation reactions were inhibited by catalase or tiron. This fact strongly suggested that the inactivation is due to the loss of biological activity of the virus nucleic acids caused by oxygen radicals generated by the autoxidation of D-ribose.
