Few studies can be found concerned with the dynamic change of the contact pressure distribution pattern beneath the braked track during the steering or turning motion of the vehicle. Most of the related reports have been based upon the assumption that contact pressure beneath the braked track under steering motion can be maintained constantly, the same as it was before the beginning of turning motion. In straight travelling, the increase of the contact area of the running device can help the terrain vehicle in improving its tractive performance. This can be found in the actual construction machinery like a bulldozer equipped with swamp crawler shoes. The pulling operation needs more traction force in straighrt travelling. The enlargement of the contact area of the running device to the ground can decrease the sinkage of the vehicle and it reduces running resistance also. In steering or turning motion of the vehicle, a large contact area will produce more resistance and promote disturbance of the top soil and sinkage. It can be concluded from this fact that the increase of the contact area of the running device can bring greater improvement of the trafficability. However, it can also make a difficult condition for turning motion under steering, due to the resistance produced from the bulldozing motion of the soil around the running device (braked track in this case). For reducing the resistance in turning moition, the contact area should be less. This can be controlled by changing the contact length instead of the width of the track. To obtain smooth and less resistant turning, the contact area should be decreased by shortening the contact length. In this paper, it was found that the contact pressure distribution pattern can be varied and concentrated on the center point of the braked track with the progress of turning motion.
