In this study, the stiffness and strength of wooden walls and floors was investigated. There were two themes : Series I : Effect of joint properties between columns and horizontal wood members on rigidity of wall frames. Series II : Rigidity of floor frames with horizontal angle braces or plywood gusset In series I, there were four kinds of specimens ; I-A, I-B, I-C1 and I-C2 (Figs. 1, 2, and 3) In series II, there were three kinds of specimens ; II-A, II-B, and II-C(Fig.4). Horizontal shear force was applied to evaluate the rigidity and strength of these frames(Fig.5) The following conclusions were derived : 1) Strength of wall frames with columns of balloon framing was graater than that of wall frames with columns of platform framing by 30%~50% at 1/60 radian deformajtion. When columns of platform framing are substituted for those of balloon framing, it should be noted that rigid metal fasteners between the column on the first floor and that on the second floor are required. (2)Horizontal angle braces with bolt and nuts contribute most effectively to increasing the rigidity of floor frames. The next most effective was the use of horizontal braces with nails. The effect of plywood gussets was the least.
