By “free translation” I mean that there is no exact correspondence between the words and sentences in the two languages, yet there is still correspondence in the meaning. This article studies the types and reasons for free translation．   In section 2, the types of free translation are discussed. These include : free translation of indirect expressions in Japanese （J） into direct expression in Chinese （C） （sect.2.1），free translation from J into rhetorical questions in C.（sect.2.2）, free translation to “reverse” （sect.2.3）, and free translation from J to explanatory expressions in C （sect.2.4）.
