Now, in the second semester of 1999, this six-month intensive study program is being taught for the fifth time. The first and second time the course was offered, enrollment was open only to foreign research fellows nominated by their embassy and forelgn Students enrolled in the Faculty of Education's teacher-training program. The third time the course was given, in the semester beginning October 1998, enrollment was opened to include all international students recommended by their supervisilng teacher whose level in Japanese was determined as suitable for an elementary course. In this paper,  the present status of the Japanese Intensive Elementary Course is reported, focuslng on the students enrolled in the first and second semester of 1999. Issues related to how students are accepted into the course and how the course has been guided are examined.
