Objective: This literature review was to clarify the challenges among Japanese adolescents with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes.
Methods: I searched literatures using Ichushi-Web and Cinii for the domestic literatures, and PubMed and CINAHL for the foreign literatures in July 2020.
Result: The research methods in the 27 articles included 11 descriptive studies (9 qualitative studies and 2 case reports) and 16 analytical studies (13 cross-sectional studies, 1 intervention study, 1 cohort study, and 1 retrospective study), and the challenges among adolescents were classified into the following five areas: parent-child relationship, school life, psychology, social independence, and transition.
Conclusion: To address the challenges among Japanese adolescents with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes, Health Care Providers (HCP) need to provide family supports, including building good parent-adolescent relationships, and opportunities to acquire social skills, and supporting independence, including building readiness. Therefore, it was suggested that we need to collect information on these supports and consider the support tailored to the characteristics of Japan.
