The velocity distribution is measured by the time-of-flight method in a molecular beam which is extracted from a free jet. It is shown that the molecular velocity distribution functions of Ar and N₂ beam is Maxwellian and Mach number of the beams stays low as far as the free jet is surrounded by a shock wave system.
