| 内容記述 | Scholastic philosophers treated a theory of causation as a subject of metaphysics, the branch of philosophy which deals with the classification and characterization of beings. The same is true of early modern philosophers such as Descartes, Malebranche and Berkeley. But David Hume coming out on stage, the philosophical scene of a theory of causation underwent a complete change. He treated cause and related concepts in term of causal reasoning and judgement, namely our epistemic activities, and thereby turned from the metaphysics to the epistemology of causation. Of course, Hume was familiar with early modern philosophers including the ones mentioned above and their metaphysical theories of causation, in particular, occasionalism espoused by Malebranche and other Cartesians. And his use of such terms as “second cause” and “concurrence” shows that he had at least some knowledge of concurrentism, the standard view in the Scholastic theory of causation. Furthermore, he presents his own theory of causation as one replacing such metaphysical theories as occasionalism and concurrentism. However, his treatment of his rival positions is thoroughly epistemological and he does not intend to propose a new metaphysical position. In this paper, I argue for the view presented above and explore its implications, and also show the difference between Hume’s theory of causation and Malebranche’s and Berkeley’s theories. |
