As part of Mie University's regional contribution activities first language maintenance classes have been delivered across Tsu City since 2009. At present this consists of Portuguese and Chinese language lessons for immigrant children delivered at Mie University and community schools.
There are three main objectives. Firstly, in partnership with City Hall and its Board of Education we contribute to building a symbiotic multicultural society. Secondly, we promote the importance of L 1 maintenance and in doing so protect and support the establishment of immigrant children's identity. Thirdly, we collaborate with local communities to develop immigrant children into bilingual and bicultural citizens able to bind Japan with their mother countries.
In this report we address creation of teaching materials, progress to date, teacher
support & guidance, current guidance issues and the views of parents and teachers.
More research and investigation is necessary to develop a high quality support system which will facilitate the development of bilingua1/bicultural internationalised
people who can contribute to and prosper in Japanese socicty. Through this activity
we seek to contribute to building a successful symbiotic multicultural society in
partnership with local communities.
