| 内容記述 | The problem of induction, to put it very briefly, is the problem concerning the possibility of the justification of inductive inference. I take up in this paper, not the problem of induction itself, but the philosophical context in which the problem first emerged in David Hume’s Treatise of Human Nature (1739). Ian Hacking, in his Emergence of Probability, an original work on the conceptual history of “probability,” deals with the emergence of the problem of induction, and puts forward the view that it was a transformation Hume brought about in epistemology, namely the transference of causation from the realm of knowledge to that of probability, that enabled him to raise the problem. But, in my view, Hacking’s account of the emergence of the problem of induction is insufficient. In order to show its insufficiency, I explore the metaphysical background of the early modern theory of causation and show that the emergence of the problem has also to do with a transformation Hume brought about in metaphysics. And, furthermore, considering what the transformation really was, I show that it was by the turn Hume made in his theory of causation from the metaphysics to the epistemology of causation that the problem first emerged in Hume. | |||||||||||
