| 内容記述 | Ralph Waldo Emersonの Representative Men（ 1850）はエマソンが「代表」と「表現」の観念を形成するのを助けた六人の「偉大な人々」を論じる。プラトン、スウェーデンボルグ、モンテーニュ、シェイクスピア、ナポレオン、ゲーテは人々の精神を代表すると同時に、それを表現した人々である。“Swedenborg; or, the Mystic “の章は、スウェーデンボルグの著作、The Economy of the Animal Kingdom がプラトンやネオプラトニストの観念論を自然科学の観点から更新したことを評価する。スウェーデンボルグの物質世界が精神世界を代表するという観察はエマソンに自然界における「人間の無限性」を教えた。 スウェーデンボルグはプラトンの「上昇する」愛の観念を受け継ぎ、“Natural, Spiritual, and Celestial”という三段階を設けた。一度はスウェーデンボルグを信奉したWilliam Blake がMarriage of Heaven andHell（ 1789）では段階を峻別することを批判したように、エマソンの詩、“Initial, Dæmonic and CelestialLove” もまた物質界と精神界との対応や代表関係、天地をつなぐ「真の天文学」を示すことでスウェーデンボルグの思想を更新したことを、三部構成の詩の第二部に「ダイモン」と「天」とが同時に現れる理由やキューピッドの目と天空との対応の描写を中心に検証する。 |

| 内容記述 | Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Representative Men (1850) deals with six “great men” who show how Emerson’s idea of “representative” was conceived. Each of the six—Plato, Swedenborg, Montaigne, Shakespeare, Napoleon and Goethe—is in fact representative of many people. Emerson uses each great man to express or represent what they thought with regard to their common humanity. The chapter “Swedenborg; or, the Mystic” argues that Swedenborg renewed the Idealism of Plato and Neo-Platonists in terms of modern science. While Emerson designates Swedenborg as “the mystic,” he actually esteems Swedenborg more highly as a naturalist than as a mystic talking on a heavenly world. Swedenborg’s The Economy of the Animal Kingdom (1744-45) convinced Emerson of the force and law of this material world as representative of and corresponding to that of the spirit. Swedenborg proved Plato’s correspondence between microcosm and macrocosm scientifically, and inspired Emerson on the possibility of man’s infinitude in nature or that “God is the grand man.” Swedenborg inherits the Platonic idea of the ascension of love and sets three Degrees of Altitude: Natural, Spiritual and Celestial. As William Blake, once a Swedenborgian, criticized Swedenborg’s strict division of man’s life as is suggested in his poem, Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1789), Emerson’s poem “Initial, Dæmonic, and Celestial Love” aims to show the fusion or correspondence between matter and spirit, the “true astronomy” existing in this world and universe. Cupid’s initial love and Emerson’s emphasis on his eye presents an image of man dissolved in the arc of the starry heaven. Dæmon comes from Socrates’s idea of a demi-god who bridges between man and god. Emerson does not separate “Dæmonic” from “Celestial” as suggested by the discrepancy in chapter titles: Chapter 2 includes those two words while Chapter 3 has no title. Dæmon could be a genius, a personal guardian angel working in this world and at the same time part of Genius or the World-Soul. Though the terms seem both Platonic and Swedenborgian, Emerson invents a better sense of circulation and economy of the natural world than Swedenborg achieved. |
