内容記述 | This paper examines the concept of “openness toward society” as used in the Japanese Curriculum Guidelines of 2018, placing it in the context of Taisho Liberal Education. According to the Guidelines, “openness toward society” is a key educational outcome that extends across the local, the national, and the global. The same outcome was pursued in Taisho Liberal Education, which reached its zenith in the inter-war years and was characterized by its cultural internationalism (cf. Iriye 1997). The proponents of Taisho Liberal Education developed educational practices that extended across the local, the national, and the global. While the Manchurian incident (1931) and the Second China-Japan War (1937) made “openness toward the global” increasingly difficult as a desired educational outcome, several schools founded in the spirit of Taisho Liberal Education continued to pursue international understanding education and aimed for “openness toward the global”. The paper compares and contrasts two educational projects promoted by schools in accordance with the spirit of Taisho Liberal Education: the International Students Department of Tamagawa Gakuen, which provided “international” education to Manchurian students in Tokyo, and the Beijing Life School of Jiyu Gakuen, which provided “international” education to local students in Beijing under Japanese occupation. In particular, the paper seeks to shed light on the school directors’ sense of equality among Japanese students and Manchurian/Beijingese students who jointly took part in “international” education aiming “openness toward the global”. | |||||||||
