内容記述 | In February and March 2000, thirty-four undergraduate students participated in the language study tour in University of Tasmania. Their expectations and evaluations on the program were expressed in the pre-departure questionnaire survey and another survey was administered after the tour was completed. This report discusses the results of the surveys and future development of the programs. The pre-departure survey shows that overwhelming majority of the participants are not confident about their ability in English, thus are primarily motivated to improve their practical communicative skills. Further, they expect a wide range of cross-cultural experience including learning local cultures and making friends. After the study tour, the majority of them expressed their satisfaction with the program and intention to recommend the program to their friends. Nevertheless, the language classes consisting solely with Japanese students became the source of their complaints. They prefer to study the language with a group of students from different origins so that the English language becomes the real lingua franca of the class. The participants found their homestay experience most enjoyable and fruitfui. They developed local relationships primarily through homestay families. It was revealed that University of Tasmania offers a desirable study environment for inexperienced students. The program should continue relying on the thoroughly professional and dedicated staff members of UTAS. Further, more diversified overseas study programs should be developed in order to respond the needs of the students. | |||||||||
