内容記述 | The effective use of energy has been the main research area in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This is due to the fact that sensor nodes are equipped with limited battery resources. Since traffic is expected to be low in WSNs, it is not necessary to keep the radio hardware operating continuously. The radio hardware is pointed out as the main energy consumer. At the MAC layer the use of duty cycle (periodic active-in active operation) has been proposed to reduce the energy wasting due to idle listening. The IEEE 802.15.4 is a newly developed Physical (PRY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (LR-WPANs). Its operation characteristics make it suitable for WSNs. The operation mode called the "Beacon Enabled-mode" "operates with duty cycle. The duty cycle should be determined according to the traffic generated at the network. However, the traffic shows fluctuations in the temporal and spatial domain. In other words, the traffic fluctuates with time and according to the location inside the network. This shows obviously the need of an adaptive control of the duty cycle. Related to IEEE 802.15.4, some works have proposed traffic adaptive MAC mechanisms. However, only the temporal aspect is considered. Our proposed mechanism improves the conventional one by including adaptive duty cycle control according to the location. In the IEEE 802.15.4, the duty cycle is defined according to the following parameters: the Beacon Order (BO), the Superframe Order (SO) and the Contention Access Period (CAP)length. Basically, the BO determines the period of the duty cycle; the SO, the duration of the active part (Superframe); and the CAP length, one of the two parts which the Superframe is divided into. The other part is optional, so the duration of the active part can be determined only by the CAP length. The SO and BO are uniform for all the elements in the network, and determined by a coordinator (PAN Coordinator). This is not the case of the CAP length which, in a cluster-tree network topology, each cluster can determine its own CAP length according to the current cluster traffic. In this way the proposed mechanism achieves spatial traffic adaptation. In the proposed mechanism, the adaptation is done in two steps. The Radio Channel Occupancy (Ru) indicates the radio channel activity and is monitored at each cluster by the Cluster Head (CH). At the cluster level control, the CAP length is adjusted (increase or decrease) according to the monitored Ru. This adjustment is carried out when the Ru exceeds some thresholds. If the CAP length reaches certain limits inside the superframe structure, the CH sends a request to the PAN Coordinator to activate the network level control. At this step, the PAN coordinator modifies the SO (increases or decreases by one). After the SO modification, the whole process is repeated. The proposed mechanism was evaluated by computer simulation and compared with the conventional one. It was found that the proposed mechanism outperforms the original IEEE 802.15.4 as well as the conventional mechanism in static and dynamic non-uniform traffic conditions; in terms of throughput, delay and energy consumption. | |||||||
